For many riders, a motorcycle isn't just transportation; it's a lifestyle. But on two wheels, you are far more vulnerable than drivers in cars. That's why carrying the state minimum liability insurance is rarely enough. To truly protect yourself and your bike, you need to look at specialized coverages.

Guest Passenger Liability

In some states, standard liability coverage does not automatically cover a passenger riding on the back of your bike. If you plan to ride with a friend or partner, you must confirm that "Guest Passenger Liability" is included in your policy. Without it, you could be personally liable for their medical bills if you cause an accident.

Custom Parts and Equipment (CPE)

Did you add chrome pipes, custom saddlebags, or a specialized paint job? Standard policies usually cover the stock bike. If you've invested thousands in upgrades, you need CPE coverage. Most insurers include a small amount (like $1,000) for free, but you'll need to purchase additional coverage to protect extensive modifications.

Safety Apparel Coverage

Good gear—helmets, leathers, boots, gloves—is expensive. If you slide across the asphalt, that gear is ruined. Look for a policy that includes safety apparel coverage to replace your protective equipment after an accident.

Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist (UM/UIM)

This is arguably the most important coverage for riders. If a driver hits you and they don't have insurance (or don't have enough), UM/UIM pays for your medical bills and lost wages. Given the severity of motorcycle injuries, relying on the other driver's insurance is a massive gamble.
